Watch a video about the Event Manager and the Timeline.
The Event Manager allows you to add and delete events, and also to attach associated information to each events.
The Details Tab of the Event Manager allows you to add the following data to each event:
The OCCURS section allows you to set a time or a timespan on which an event occurred.
If you choose āOnā from the OCCURS dropdown, you can set an exact time the event occurred on. You can enter a date (such as July 23, 1984
) or a date and a time (such as July 23, 1984, 11:30
).
If you choose āBetween,ā you can enter two dates that the event occurs between. So if you enter July 23, 1984
and August 2, 1984
, you are indicating that this event occurred at any time between those two dates.
If you choose āFrom," you can enter two dates, which indicates that this event occurred in a contiguous block of time between those two dates.
In the CHRONOLOGICAL RELATIONS section, you can define the relationships between events (see below).
In the PARTICIPANTS section, you can indicate which characters participate in this event.
In the LOCATIONS section, you can specify which locations this event occurs in.
Chronological Relations are a way of relating one event to another chronologically, and then enforcing the logic you set up through adding relations. You can see how this works by reading the field labels from left to right, INTERVAL MUST-COME EVENT
.
In the INTERVAL
field, you can enter a timespan like ā6 weeks,ā ā4 days,ā or ā1 year.ā
In the MUST-COME
field, you can specify whether this current event must come before or after the event in the EVENT
field.
In the EVENT
field, choose another event that you want to relate this current event to.
You can also create a relation without an interval, in the form MUST-COME EVENT
. So for an inquest, you could create the relation after Murder of Colonel Cooper
. This means that the inquest can only occur after the murder. If you look at the event Murder of Colonel Cooper
, you will see that a corresponding relation has been created there, in the form before Inquest into Murder of Colonel Cooper
.
Depending on the relations you have entered for an event, Granthika will work out the dates for that event. For example, in the image above, the user has entered a relation that specifies that the inquest into the Abbas Parva Tragedy must come 6 days after the Abbas Parva Tragedy. The user has also specified that the Abbas Parva Tragedy happened on April 7, 1889. Accordingly, Granthika works out that the inquest takes place on April 13, 1889.
Relations you enter yourself are direct relations. Based on these direct relations, Granthika will work out many inferred relations between the events in your story. Often, the inferred relations for an event will outnumber the direct relations you have created yourself. You can use the Relation Controls to select what relations are visible for an event.
Granthika has the ability to reason over the relations you add to events. We plan to add similar reasoning abilities to other aspects of your story, such as the relationships between characters.

When Granthika calculates the date of an event (or another element), clicking on the button above opens the Explainer dialog. This dialog shows youāin a visual fashionāthe logic that Granthika has utilized in its calculation. Sometimes this logic is shown in a step-wise fashion, and you can examine the various sub-steps of a step by clicking on the expand button next to a step.
An event can be depicted in a discourse element (a part, chapter, section, or scene). The DEPICTIONS tab shows all the discourse elements that depict the current event.
